Spinal Stenosis ExplanationWhat is Spinal Stenosis? These next few pages are to give you a spinal stenosis explanation, and after reading it you will have a better understanding of the condition, as well as knowing you options. Spinal stenosis is a condition of the spinal canal characterized by the narrowing of the tunnel-like space the spinal cord occupies. If you can picture a stack of donuts and a rope traveling down the tunnel formed by this stack of donuts you now have the spinal canal- spinal cord relationship. The spinal canal is formed by vertebrae, which form the spinal column. The spinal column is movable because of the joints that are formed by the intervertebral discs and the articulation of facets between each vertebral body. If the spinal canal is made smaller in diameter then the walls of the canal can approach the spinal cord and put pressure on the cord causing an array of symptoms that include pain, numbness and tingling down the arms and legs, electric shock sensations, muscle spasms, muscle cramps, weakness, difficulty walking, and more significant problems like cauda equina syndrome (a condition that affects bowel or bladder control) or paralysis. This spinal cord compression is also known as spinal cord encroachment or spinal cord effacement.
