It depends. Some patients have mild problems and can be fixed in 1-4 weeks; others take longer. NCV/EMG pinpoints your wrist pain, identifying its source, whether that's neck or localized to the wrist. This test also checks for nerve damage. If NCV/EMG testing reveals that your carpal tunnel syndrome originates in the neck, Dr. Thomas may order an MRI for you, to see the physical severity of the problem.

Your Office Visit Will Include:

• 1. Pain Assessment Consultation: You'll answer specific questions that will help discover the actual cause of your pain. This is also an opportunity for Dr. Thomas to have a thorough understanding of your situation and pain.


• 2. Examination: Aside from the typical exam procedures like cranial nerve testing, reflexes, and vital signs, you will also receive a multi-plane head and neck range of motion study, palpatory examination, and specific orthopedic and neurological tests.


• 3. Anterior-Posterior and Lateral Neck (X-rays IF Needed): If after the consultation and examination it is found that x-rays are needed of the bones, discs and soft tissue of the neck, they will be taken at this visit... In order to get a good view of all the supporting structures, at least 2 views will be taken; one for the front view and one for the side view. (X-Rays are not a part of the free consultation, but may be taken by Dr. Thomas with your consent to treatment.)


• 4. Carpal Tunnel Treatment: Dr. Thomas will explain your options, and order any further test that might be needed. If your problem is one that can be treated immediately, immediate treatment will be an option for you on your first visit. WORK RELATED INJURY?

If your condition was caused by or occurred on the job, or if your job aggravates a pre-existing condition (whether you were aware of it or not,) you may be entitled to Workers' Compensation benefits which pay 100% of your treatment. There are three types of work injuries:

1. A time, place injury. For example, a typewriter falls on your foot, fracturing it, on 9/27/97 at 10:25 AM, or you hurt your back lifting a box on 10/01/97 at 9:00 AM at 1 Main St., your town.

2. A cumulative trauma disorder (CTD). These injuries occur over time, usually from repetitive motions such as typing or working with a mouse. The symptoms develop gradually over time, going from occasional to intermittent and often becoming constant. The intensity level of the pain can also increase over time as the problem develops. These types of injuries are often referred to as repetitive stress injuries, or RSIs.

3. Aggravation of a pre-existing condition. If you have a pre-existing condition that is aggravated by your work, you are entitled to workers compensation benefits. For example, you have a disc bulge in your neck that has been there even before you started working at your job, and it flares up because of your work duties, Workers Compensation will pay for treatment which brings you back to your condition prior to the work injury (pre-injury status). Your employer hired you as is; the fact that you had a condition when you were hired does not affect your eligibility to get your treatment covered.
