Causes of Facet SyndromeThere are several causes of facet syndrome. The facet joints can be injured with a repetitive movement, trauma or arthritic changes. Joint syndrome is often associated with degenerative disorders such as osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease. Facet syndrome is not typically a disorder in itself but associated with another conditions. Age and natural degeneration or an injury can cause the cartilage cushion that surrounds the bones to wear away. Pain comes from the bones of the joint rubbing together. Causes of facet syndrome pain can also come from irritated or pinched nerves. Nerve roots pass through the joints from the spinal cord and into the arms, legs, and other areas of the body. When joints are swollen or inflamed, they can block the nerve root openings and subsequently pinch the nerve leading to facet hypertrophy. Sudden excessive movement can traumatize the facet joint creating an inflammatory reaction leading to swelling and pain in the joints. The pain can range from a few days to long lasting with chronic facet joint pain. Disc degeneration and a loss of disc height is natural with age and can worsen with poor posture, lack of exercise and strength building. Prolonged sitting where the lumbar spine is flexed increases the pressure on the discs and sedentary lifestyles increase the risks of spine disorders. As the discs shrink the facet joints come in contact with one another causing pain. Start practicing good posture while sitting and standing today. Take a walk to encourage blood flow while bringing oxygen and nutrients into the spine to prevent degenerative conditions. To treat facet syndrome and the related conditions, consider IDD Therapy®.
