Causes of Sciatica

Causes of sciatica can result from several factors and is often the consequence of a compressed or pinched nerve. Pain can arise after a serious car accident, a fall, over excretion, or a back injury. Sciatica is more common in older adults, although it can affect all ages. Fortunately permanent nerve damage is very rare.

Pinched nerves in the lumbar spine can be a result of a herniated or slipped disc, degenerative disc disease piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, or spondylolisthesis.

If these terms are unfamiliar, here is the basic breakdown of each cause:

  • Herniated disc- Once this occur, pressure is put on the nerve root causing the sciatic pain (this is the most common).

  • Degenerative disc disease- Here the disc loses its flexibility and height, which is normal with aging and can be a precursor to a herniated disc.

  • Piriformis syndrome- The piriformis, a small muscle deep within the buttocks, can become tight or have spasms.

  • Lumbar spinal stenosis- Here the spinal canal begins to narrow and sciatic nerve can become impinged when it's space is being invaded.

  • Spondylolisthesis- This is when a vertebra slips and becomes out of line and this narrows the opening for the nerve.

Other less common causes are sacroiliitis, lumbar facet joint syndrome, liolumbar syndrome, or spinal tumors.
