Facet HypertrophyFacet hypertrophy is the enlarging of the facet joints. This occurrence in the spinal area can be painful if the enlarged bones begin to impinge on the nerves.
Facet joint Hypertrophy occurs when the facet joints enlarge. The increase in size can put pressure on the spinal nerves. The facet joints are a synovial joint, meaning it is surrounded by a lubricating fluid capsule. These joints allow for fluid movement, rotation, and extension of the spine, while limiting excessive motion. With age, wear and tear the spinal discs begin to flatten and consequently brings the bones closer together. Like other joints in the body, they are subject to arthritis. In order for the body to deal with the changes, it will begin to add extra bone to strengthen the joints. The facet joints hypertrophy, enlarge. When the arthritic bones increase, the overgrowth can bulge into the spinal canal and pinch the spinal cord. Facet hypertrophy is often caused by osteoarthritis as osteophytes grow on the bony areas of the facet joint. Another cause is degenerative disc disease which leads to a loss of height in the discs, brining the facet joints closer together and placing more pressure on one another. This can also encourage to the growth of osteophytes. Patients with facet joint hypertrophy will alter their posture in attempts at removing the pressure on the nerve root. The pain is typically accompanied by stiffness.
