Nerve Conduction Velocity and ElectromyographyNCV/EMG
Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) and Electromyography Testing
What is it? Electromyography and nerve conduction studies are used to help diagnose a broad range of neurological disorders that affect nerves and muscles. NCV / EMG is useful in the diagnosis of pinched nerves (radiculopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), muscle diseases or disorders, and carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as many other issues. Nerve Conduction Velocity is performed using "sticky" electrodes which are applied to the skin overlying a muscle or sensory nerve and applying a very small electrical shock. The physical therapist will measure the response of the nerve to the stimulus. This helps determine if the nerve is responding appropriately and can help clarify your diagnosis. EMG is performed by inserting a very thin, acupuncture-like, disposable needle through the skin into the muscle. The electrical behavior of the muscle provides very specific information about the muscle and the nerve that runs to the muscle. Does it Hurt? Most patients report feeling nothing more than a "strange" sensation during the test. A few patients report mild discomfort, but most are able to complete the testing. If you feel you are unable to continue, please be sure to tell the physical therapist immediately. Preparation Please shower or bathe in hot water, using a mild soap with no added lotion or moisturizers. Ivory soap is recommended. Do not use powder, body lotion or oils on the body part being tested. Bath and body products leave a film on the skin. Your skin must be clean and "bare" in order for the electrodes to stick.
