Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Spinal stenosis symptoms occur as the spinal canal narrows and the diameter of the canal is smaller. The spinal canal walls begin to encroach on the spinal cord and when the pressure is placed on the cord, you will begin to feel the pinch. The narrowing does not always cause problems initially as the condition is more progressive over time. Therefore these effects are most often felt in the elderly.

The discomfort begins as the spinal cord or spinal nerves are compressed. The general symptoms are back pain with possible leg pain or weakness. The pain tends to increase with standing and walking and typically a short period of rest can bring some temporal relief.

Symptoms

• Pain, numbness and tingling down the arms and legs known as radiculopathy
• Electric shock sensations
• Muscle spasms, muscle cramps
• Weakness, and/or difficulty walking
• Cauda Equina Syndrome
