Spinal Stenosis TreatmentSpinal stenosis treatment varies as with any condition depending on the severity. Options range from exercise and lifestyle modifications to surgery. Conservative treatment typically cannot heal or reverse the condition completely, but rather lessen the pain and discomfort. Exercise and Lifestyle Modifications Avoiding activities that increase the symptoms are an obvious change. Leaning forward can typically bring some relief. When shopping you can use the cart to lean over. Instead of walking, you can use a stationary bike and bend over the handlebars. Sitting in a recliner rather than a straight back chair can also provide some relief. Overall having the back flexed rather than extended is more comfortable. Epidural Injections and/or Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Over-the-counter and prescriptions medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or aspirin can reduce the inflammation. Although they may provide some relief, there is a limit to how much pain they control. More is not always better and can lead to stomach ulcers, so be careful how much you take.
