Spinal Stenosis Treatment

Spinal stenosis treatment varies as with any condition depending on the severity. Options range from exercise and lifestyle modifications to surgery. Conservative treatment typically cannot heal or reverse the condition completely, but rather lessen the pain and discomfort.

Exercise and Lifestyle Modifications
Although exercise cannot cure, it is still beneficial. Activity should be performed to the level that is tolerable. Working with a physical therapist to build strength and maintain flexibility in your spine is very important. Appropriate physical therapy is available at Allied Healthcare Clinics.

Avoiding activities that increase the symptoms are an obvious change. Leaning forward can typically bring some relief. When shopping you can use the cart to lean over. Instead of walking, you can use a stationary bike and bend over the handlebars. Sitting in a recliner rather than a straight back chair can also provide some relief. Overall having the back flexed rather than extended is more comfortable.

Epidural Injections and/or Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Shots and pains pills are a temporary fix that may serve only to mask the symptoms of an underlying problem. Epidural injections with a shot of cortisone, also called steroid shots, into the spinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord and nerve root, may bring short term relief in some patients. This treatment can cause side effects and the amount is typically limited to three per year. This is not a treatment that Allied Healthcare Clinics administer or advocate.

Over-the-counter and prescriptions medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or aspirin can reduce the inflammation. Although they may provide some relief, there is a limit to how much pain they control. More is not always better and can lead to stomach ulcers, so be careful how much you take.

Surgery for Spinal Stenosis
The last resort for those with spinal stenosis is surgical intervention. It is important to note that about half of back surgeries fail. Procedures that are used to treat spinal stenosis include: decompressive laminectomy, laminotomy, or fusion. These surgeries have risks. While they may relieve pressure from the spine, considerable post-surgical pain is expected. Often, movement is restricted. Recovery varies from weeks to months. Surgery does not address the degenerative process and symptoms can return.

IDD Therapy® for Spinal Stenosis
Less invasive than epidural injections, more effective than surgery, IDD Therapy® is offered at Allied Healthcare Clinics. This process treats the causes of spinal stenosis. It is completely non-surgical and involves no needles, no drugs and is relatively pain-free. For working professionals, IDD Therapy® offers the best of both worlds, effective treatment and no downtime.

The FDA-cleared Accu-SPINA® IDD Therapy® protocol allows for patients to have long term relief with no worry of side effects. Treatment reclines patients to a level that exactly targets their spinal problems. A calibrated computer program exactly manages the process. Many of our patients fall asleep while undergoing IDD Therapy®.
